Before leaving Kawakawa we spent a good lunch just across the road from the Hundertwasser and the food were really delicious I mean It looked a lot like a coffee shop and It wasn’t on my expectation that they’d serve foods that well. I couldn’t say anything against the staff, they accommodate their diners well and it seems they have loyal customers or perhaps they get used to tourist visiting the Hundertwasser.
Kawakawa is 16 kms to Paihia we follow SH11 to Paihia the gateway to the Bay of Islands as it is a home of 144 spectacular islands of the Bay. You can imagine a place surrounded by tourist and vacationers. You will never run out of activities in Paihia there are golf courses but it wasn’t that interesting for us to do since we were more about the bay itself. There are plenty of accommodations from backpackers to family renters, but we were up to look for campgrounds for our motorhome (Campervan hire New Zealand) and we got a good one along Puketona Road.

Paihia was a great place after our beach buffets all the way from Warkworth. We went kayaking up the Waitangi River to Haruru Falls and it turned out so fun and really an awesome experience we were kind of soaked because of the crazy things we did while kayaking. We spent the rest of the day walking through the bays and the taking advantage of the smell of the mangroves greeting us along the way as we would not be smelling it back home in Australia.
We began the next day with a short cruise on the Bay of Islands and plenty of speedy boats are boarded with tourist exploring the bay too. Passing on the hole of the rock was nice it wasn’t that thrilling though because rode a medium sized speed boat. It was more joyful to see dolphins, plenty of dolphins I could have stretched my had to touch them if we had a smaller boat. There are several remote islands on the bay that I wished to explore the rest behind its golden sand and calm trees.

Driving is as broad as the road unless you know where to drive. Road conditions in new Zealand are excellent so as our Warkworth to Whangarei roadtrip. Angles in Northland are too healthy for the eyes. Luscious forests, long green valleys, breezy beaches, high mountains and nice towns to discover is just an overall awesome i must say. Turning right from Wellsford will take you to the Pakiri Beach, their holiday park introduces all types of accomodation for families, backpackers, short or long stays and just a lot of things to do there. You can spend a cold night on tents too. Pakiri Beach will make your day take time to tour the beach by a horse, fishing off the beach, scuba diving with the pink and orange fishes, or drag yourself on the nearby golf course. After a full day you can pack your things back and hit the highway and head to another beach through the Twin Coast Discovery Highway out to Mangawhai.
Mangawhai is a little seaside village and is like a hidden spot to discover as few people flock to at Mangawhai however it keeps on attracting more people as the days go by. It is another surfer’s paradise while being a good spot for kids too. Getting to Mangawhai wouldn’t be a regret, aside from an easy access from Pakiri, there’s a uniqueness on the tracks to walk by and probably the friendliest diving spot. Charter and recreational fishing boats ply the off shore waters and it would be another good day on the shore. Mangawhai with 5 beautiful beaches within a 10-15 minute drive is as spoiling as a chocolate mountain. Mangawhai restaurants are well catered if you want to have a fine meal. Or you can also drop off at some superettes if driving. If your not done with Pakiri and Mangawhai Follow Waipu’s Heritage Trail by feet or by car, follow the coast road south to Waipu Cove, another beach great for swimming, fishing and don’t miss - surfing. There are campgrounds here too. Moving on Ruakaka beach awaits returning to SH1 via Waipu or 30km south of Whangarei. Here you can find accomodations close to the beach or campgrounds too. Ruakaka is your gateway to the oil refinery at Marsden Point.
Returning back to SH1 continue driving to the only city in Northland, the Wangarei. Visiting the Wangarei falls would be a good experience for first timers you can see a close up of the falls from standing on the bridge but its not as spectacular as the other falls you’d see in Canada. Don’t miss the Clapham’s Clock Museum,a renowned teahouse too. Whangarei has a pretty harbor, arts and crafts shops. Going west will take you to Dargaville in less than thirty minutes, your gateway to the Ancient forests of the Kauri Coast which features the Waipoua Forest. That is if you want some forest encounters.

Kaikoura is a town on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 1 180 km north of Christchurch. During the middle of our Campervan hire New Zealand in January 2009 we stayed overnight in Kaikoura where whale watching is fantastic! Seeing the giant sperm whale, dusky dolphins, and fur seals are some rare experiences for me. We watched them by boat but you can also take a scenic flight or an air tour in a span minimum of 30 minutes.
Campgrounds are extensive and expect abundance in seafood. Local specialties include the town’s number one on the list is the Crayfish, Groper, Cod Mussels, Paua, and some that are seasonally available are scallops, oysters and whitebait. If you wanna get rid of cooking and jump on a restaurant you won’t regret it. Seafoods are cooked to that taste you’d surely want more. We’ve been into this little stop that you don’t wanna mess with — the seafood stand in Kaikoura, located along the roadside about a kilometer from the seal colony. How incredible that it drives traffic and like there’s no other. I love Crayfish and Mussels. I knew that they cook so well. When my crayfish and mussels were served I couldn’t help the smell, It’s like telling me to get the knife and the fork working. And the moment I placed it on my mouth… mmmmmm… It was the most delightful crayfish I’ve ever laid on my tongue. The Mussels were great but I wont forget my moment with Crayfish plus, they serve generously.
